March is Women’s History Month, and what better way to celebrate than by supporting some of our favorite women-owned brands within the sober space? Alcohol alternatives are having a BIG moment. From mixers to zero-proof spirits, sober options are becoming more accessible to everyone, and women are at the forefront of that moment. Here are just a few of the incredible women-owned sober businesses that we’re excited to support this month.
Siren Shrub
Siren Shrub is a brand of alcohol-free sparkling shrubs and cocktail mixers. Friends since 2010, Layne Cozzolino and Mindy McCord founded the brand after realizing that shrubs made the perfect alcohol replacement for pregnant people. They began testing recipes in their kitchens with local produce, and those same values of community and sustainability have remained even as the brand has grown. Every Siren Shrub product is created using ethically sourced ingredients from local Wisconsin farms.
Joyus Wine
Joyus Wine is an entirely alcohol-free brand of wine created by Jessica Selander. With 17 years of sobriety under her belt, Selander understands the need for a sober beverage that still feels celebratory and exciting. Joyus does just that. Using a unique process that breaks down wine on the molecular level in order to remove alcohol, they’ve created a selection of wines that taste entirely authentic and totally delicious. Joyus is the only sober-owned and woman-owned non-alcoholic winery in the country, and they’ve garnered a lot of praise for their wines. Their recipes have even taken home multiple medals from The San Francisco International Wine Competition, making them the first alcohol-free wine to do so!
Spiritless
Spiritless is (you guessed it!) a line of alcohol-free spirits founded by Lauren Chitwood, Abbey Ferguson, and Lexie Lancaster Larsen. As natives of Louisville, Kentucky, they understand the importance of a good cocktail, and believe that true Southern hospitality means having options for everyone. Combining their knowledge of business and the culinary arts, the Spiritless team has crafted award-winning zero-proof whiskey, tequila, and ready-to-drink options that empower their customers to forge connections while making healthy choices about their drinking habits.
El Guapo
El Guapo is a line of high-quality, alcohol-free bitters, syrups, and mixers led by Christa Cotton, and made in the cocktail capital of New Orleans, Louisiana. Cotton draws on her family’s rich history in the mixology business. She helped her parents open Georgia’s first legal distillery since prohibition, and later went on to found the New Orleans Beverage group. El Guapo’s recipes draw on this same history, featuring classic Southern flavors like Chicory Pecan and Crawfish Boil! They’ve won many accolades, and are the all-time winning-est company in the Good Food Awards elixir category.
